I would encourage you to start on a very small scale and move forward incrementally, learning as you go through experience. The failure rate with starting a restaurant is very high; especially if you have no experience in this industry. Perhaps start by selling some small baked goods and cakes through a pop-up stand. You need to learn the business side – how to process a payment, how to present and package your baked goods, what pricing works best, how much is my gross margin on an average cake sale, who are the best food sources, what kinds of baked goods sell the best and when and how to market my baked goods. There are numerous questions and issues you have to work out through hands-on actual experience.

It also helps to build up your business over time through a social following so that if and when you open your restaurant, you can pull in a lot of customers quickly. This is important since you have to cover your operating expenses. This is one of the reasons why so many restaurants fail – they are unable to pull in high volumes of customers. It takes time to build up a large customer base to make money since a fixed location has high operating expenses month to month. You need to learn the industry and the business as much as you can before opening a fixed location. Otherwise, your risk of failure is very high; especially if you do not have a loyal, devoted customer base in place.
