For many VCs, the add-on entrepreneurship trainings are really top-notch and should be encouraged. In my own opinion, not all black and brown businesses need more funding to start with. They need more technical know-how. Those that are progressive in their value propositions get more funding easily though.

The most promising aspects of VC lie in growing informed, well equipped entrepreneurs to conduct their enterprise startup and subsequent growth. That type of long term activity offers the greatest potential for small business survival and a successful VC investmant.

Most of the entrepreneurs with whom I have worked, regardless of their country or cultural background, list access to funding as a major problem in their startup or growth efforts.

Many of them understand that simply stating they need funding will not achieve a solution to their capital requirements or their long term success; so they do the best they can to develop a profile which describes their business concept and its objectives, as well as their strengths and weaknesses and the status of their development efforts. They request assistance in their areas of need.

In the U.S. many minority business enterprises are offered funding opportunities through the SBA . Special small business set-aside designations for participation in government products and services contracting have equipped many with successful avenues. Internationally, grants through major NGO's and country-based providers are available, but those offerings must be coupled with business knowledge since many are competitive.

Achieving funding for small businesses of any culture or country is a product of knowing and growing. VC and government agencies that invest in those two realms offer the most promise to small business.
