Hi Stephanie Jaquish,
Being an IT Consultant and a Chartered Website Developer has given me the opportunity to research about many industries to help them position their brand ahead of the competitors.
Getting a free blog sound save since you don't have to pay for it so that you can minimize your expenses but its not the best option because free blogs are not professional, they don't look too appealing to online users and people are most likely to ignore your blog since there are 100's of professional-looking, engaging and interactive websites out there.
Free blogs don't give you 100% ownership of your blog, you don't own full ownership of your domain name, what you will get is usually something like www.yourblog.blogspot.com This is not professional and most people won't take you seriously because it's obvious you are not investing in yourself.
This is 2019, even the smallest business around the corner has a premium website.
If you really want to grow fast online and you want the online users to respect you and your business which is the only reason why they will do business with you. Then design matters a lot, get a premium website.
Let me share my personal experience with you,
When I just started as a website developer, I have no office or staffs it was just a one-man business and I was much younger, about 21years then. What helped me was that I have a very attractive website, so detailed and professional. When prospects invite me for a presentation they often get surprised when I get to their office, their expectation is to see a more mature person and not a young dude. Some of them confess to me that they choose me because my online presence is powerful so they though I'm a big company with many staffs. This helped me secure contracts in high places that I couldn't have imagined.
