It depends on the kind of startup and who your target customer is. If your startup sells directly to individuals, you could use social media to target your target demographic by showing them relevant ads, promoted tweets or by directing them interesting news articles.

If you startup sells to business, targeted advertising on LinkedIn, doing webinars and trade shows are the way to go. In some instances, cold calling might also work. Cold calling must be your last options, it could backfire badly if it doesn't work.

Creating a free tool that will be useful for your target market and then promoting that tool instead of directly promoting your company can be effective. One example of this is HubSpot promoting https://website.grader.com/ when they first started. Don't know your business, but think about the possibility of doing something in this direction. Giving value at the first point of contact works better than asking for something.

Know your target audience - and what media they are using. Are they using Twitter, Instagram, Facebook - if so, advertise on those platforms. If they are older, then social media may not be the best format to reach them. If you are relying on a digital space/website, then ensure folks are able to easily find your site via search terms. How are your competitors promoting themselves - how are they reaching their target customers - how are they advertising their business?

Your starting point should be creating awareness about your product / service online. The best way to do that is through SEO (search engine optimization) and website optimization. Further, the business website should be placed online through backlinks (inbound linking). Content creation should also be based on specific keywords etc.

All in all, if you spend a bit on marketing, it may go a long way to establishing brand awareness and growing your business!
